Introducing Bruce Gammonley as “John Willoughby/John Dashwood/Gossip” in Sense and Sensibility
Welcome back to our Debuting Artist blog series! OpenStage is home to many incredible artists, some who have worked with the company for years and others who are brand new. This week we introduce Bruce Gammonley, playing John Willoughby, John Dashwood, and a Gossip in Sense and Sensibility.
Tell us about yourself! Where you’re from, your hobbies, past work, fun facts, or anything that comes to mind!
What made you decide to get involved with Sense and Sensibility?
I got involved with Sense and Sensibility when Noah told me that OpenStage was putting it on. I wanted to do something that was not like anything I had worked on before, and this production has certainly filled that desire.
How has your experience with OpenStage been so far?
OpenStage is fantastic to work with! Everyone is so friendly and accommodating, not to mention talented. Going from an audience member to a cast member has been a great experience.
What is your favorite thing about working in theatre?
My favorite thing about working in theatre is the connection to my creative side that it accesses. Theatre allows you to contribute to a larger piece of art that will be as great as you make it.
Tell me about a stand-out experience from rehearsals so far. Any funny/interesting stories?
One rehearsal was dedicated to just figuring out how to play the Gossip characters of the play. Every cast member that is a Gossip came up with their own way of walking, as well as specific physical gestures to portray the vampiric, hungry nature of the Gossips themselves. We put all of these gestures into a choreographed dance that you will see in the play!
Do you have any upcoming projects after Sense and Sensibility?
After Sense and Sensibility, I will be taking a little break from theatre to prep for my upcoming wedding this August! To keep up with my other projects, visit brucedavisofficial.com for updates.
Come see Bruce and the rest of the cast in Sense and Sensibility, opening January 21st!

When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart? This fresh, spirited update of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood Sisters ‒ “sensible” Elinor and “sensitive” Marianne ‒ after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Exploring what it is to be women traversing society, gossip and the opposing opinions of your heart and mind, Hamill’s adaptation explores the classic story with humor and bold theatricality, highlighted by original music and movement.
