Marlo takes the stage for the very first time with OpenStage in Reefer Madness!

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into theatre?
I began performing in high school, and my love for musical theater has only grown from there and when I realized this was something I could pursue outside of a school environment I wanted to learn everything I could!
How did you first hear about OpenStage, and what drew you to work with us for this show?

I heard about OpenStage through the Colorado Theatre Guild auditions website! After reading the show description and watching Kristen Bell perform in this show via YouTube I knew I had to do this show.

What is your role in this production, and what excited you most about working on this particular production?

My role is being a part of the ensemble! I’m the most excited about all the comedic moments we are really pushing!

What has been the most enjoyable or unexpected part of the rehearsal process so far?
The most enjoyable part of the process would have to be our dance rehearsals, they are met with such compassion and fun energy I’m always excited to dance!
What has been the most challenging part of bringing this character to life?
I would have to say the most challenging part is being able to see where these characters relationships lie with the characters around them.
Why do you think Reefer Madness is significant or relevant to audiences today?

I feel like this show’s significance lies in the idea that a lot of things in life are villanized and spun up to be this big thing when it’s hardly that at all.

What is your favorite moment or scene in the show, and why does it stand out to you?

My favorite scene would have to be when Jimmy is speaking to Jesus in the song “Listen to Jesus Jimmy” it’s so over the top and I love it!

If you could swap roles with any other character in this play for a day, who would it be and why?

If I were to pick someone to swap roles with I would love to switch with Mary Lane I love how over the top and genuinely silly she can be!

Which song in the show is your favorite? Why do you like that one?

My favorite song is “Down at the Ol Five and Dime”. It’s such a catchy tune and such a fun number to dance in!

What is your favorite play or musical?

My favorite musical right now is Lightning Thief, I love the mythology featured in this show and the music is just so breathtaking.

What is your favorite role you’ve played in the past? Why was that role special to you?

My favorite role I’ve played so far is Constance Blackwood in Ride The Cyclone. That role means the world to me because it felt like taking a look at my younger self and being able to honor part of me. Not to mention the music is beautiful and the story is one I hope I am able to portray again one day!

Is there a dream role or type of production you hope to work on in the future?

I would have to say my dream show right now is Lightning Thief, I would love to be a part of that show in any capacity. But a current project I’m excited about is Pride and Prejudice coming in 2025!

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working on theatre projects?

When not performing I love to make various kinds of crafts! Things like, earrings, paintings, and all sorts of fun stuff!

Come see Marlo take the stage in Reefer Madness
November 2-30!

There is a new menace sweeping the nation, ready to ensnare and seduce the youth and drag them down into a life of sin: Reefer Madness! Inspired by the 1936 propaganda film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids, Jimmy and Mary Lane, fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a delirious downward spiral filled with jazz music, sex and violence. Full of camp, hilarity, and mayhem—if you get high on laughter you have come to the right place!
