Jozeph takes the stage for the very first time with OpenStage in The Minutes!

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into theatre?

I started performing when I got into high school and was doing speech and debate. I didn’t do debate, but I did speech which is competitive acting. Over the course of my four years of high school, I was one of the top performers in the nation. My highest ranking was being  2nd in the nation in duo interpretation.

How did you first hear about OpenStage, and what drew you to work with us for this show?

I met Sydney at the Henry Awards in 2023 but wasn’t able to audition for the generals. 2024 came around and I saw The Minutes and I knew I absolutely had to audition.

What is your role in this production, and what excited you most about working on this particular production?

I will be playing Mr. Peel. I think what drew me to this character is he’s just very genuine, curious, and hopeful. Then, reading the script and knowing who the other characters are, it was a joy and truly hilarious. This show is my type of humor.

What has been the most enjoyable or unexpected part of the rehearsal process so far?

The most enjoyable part about this is the cast; everyone is so talented and willing to do the most when required.

What has been the most challenging part of bringing this character to life?

The most challenging part of bringing my character to life is trying to keep a straight face with all the foolishness that happens in this play.

What makes The Minutes a unique kind of play to work on?

What makes this production of The Minutes unique is that I’ve seen clips of the show and have not seen a black man play Mr. Peel.

Why do you think The MINUTES is significant or relevant to audiences today?

To keep it simple, The Minutes is relevant because the things that each character goes through and the thoughts that each character has, are relevant to what is currently happening now in our world.

What is your favorite moment or scene in the show, and why does it stand out to you?

Please just get ready for Mr. Oldfield and that’s all I’ll say.

If you could swap roles with any other character in this play for a day, who would it be and why?

I think I would swap with Miss Johnson. Because I love how elusive she is.

What is your favorite play and/or musical?

My favorite play is Fences and my favorite musical is Dreamgirls.

What is your favorite role you’ve played in the past?

My favorite role to play was principal Tom Hawkins in The Prom at Townhall Art Center.

Is there a dream role or type of production you hope to work on in the future?

I don’t truly have a dream role, but I would love to be a part of a production of The Wiz.

What do you like to do in your free time, when you’re not working on theatre projects?

In my free time I love to game and be with my friends and family.
