Cambria takes the stage for the very first time with OpenStage in Reefer Madness!

Headshot of Cambria Miers

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into theatre?
My mom involved me in theatre when I was very young, and my brother and I got to perform for various community theatres — and even Candlelight Dinner Theatre! — as kids. Then, I kept auditioning and helping in theatre all throughout high school and college.
How did you first hear about OpenStage, and what drew you to work with us for this show?

I found OpenStage online when I was searching for local theatres. I really wanted to be in Reefer Madness because I love musicals, and it’s such a funky show!

What is your role in this production, and what excited you most about working on this particular production?

I am in the ensemble. I’m super hyped about getting to sing and dance, and I just love all the songs in this show!

What has been the most enjoyable or unexpected part of the rehearsal process so far?
I’ve loved getting to know the other actors. I didn’t know what the vibe of theatre would be like in Fort Collins, and my last time performing was in college. Everyone has been so kind and welcoming and I want to hang out with all of them!
What has been the most challenging part of bringing this character to life?
Fully embodying each different personality is probably the hardest part! As part of the ensemble, I basically get to play five or six different characters. The creative freedom of creating my own character is awesome — and a bit challenging.
Why do you think Reefer Madness is significant or relevant to audiences today?

I think a lot of people can relate to the story in different ways (even with how silly and overly dramatic it is!). As I’ve been promoting the show, I’ve talked to a handful of people who saw the original Reefer Madness when they were growing up, so to see the musical version will probably be a fun twist for them. And, I know plenty of people who enjoy smoking, so I think they’ll get a kick out of the show, too! I think there is some wisdom in all the fanatics, too, that it’s important to be wise when doing drugs 😉

What is your favorite moment or scene in the show, and why does it stand out to you?

I think my favorite scene is when we perform Down at the Ol’ Five and Dime. The old-fashioned diner vibes are wonderful, and our dance is very fun and quirky!

If you could swap roles with any other character in this play for a day, who would it be and why?

Honestly, probably Jimmy. He goes on such a wild ride in this show, and I think it’d be fun to get to experience his side of things! Also, he sings The Brownie Song, which is hilarious.

Which song in the show is your favorite? Why do you like that one?

Hands down: Listen to Jesus, Jimmy. It’s so fun to sing!!

What is your favorite play or musical?

Right now, it’s definitely Mean Girls.

What is your favorite role you’ve played in the past? Why was that role special to you?

Ooo, it’s a tie between Raja Englanderova in I Never Saw Another Butterfly and Scuttle in The Little Mermaid. The former because it was my first lead role, and I loved learning more about the history of my character and the Holocaust in order to perform the role more accurately. And, the latter because it was a super fun role that’s right up my alley!

Is there a dream role or type of production you hope to work on in the future?

I would love to play Rose Fenny in Dogfight someday! I love the songs she sings. I’ve never heard of a theatre performing it, though!

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working on theatre projects?

I love spending time with my husband, playing video games, listening to music and audiobooks, making crafts, putting together cosplays, and taking care of my plants/garden!

Come see Cambria take the stage in Reefer Madness
November 2-30!

There is a new menace sweeping the nation, ready to ensnare and seduce the youth and drag them down into a life of sin: Reefer Madness! Inspired by the 1936 propaganda film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids, Jimmy and Mary Lane, fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a delirious downward spiral filled with jazz music, sex and violence. Full of camp, hilarity, and mayhem—if you get high on laughter you have come to the right place!
