Jolie Beth takes the stage for the very first time with OpenStage in October Surprise!

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into theatre?
When I was very young, I would create little “sets” around the living room, think up a story, and move to each set and sing a song. That transitioned to school plays, getting degrees in music theater and theater, and then performing as an adult.
How did you first hear about OpenStage, and what drew you to work with us for this show?

I haven’t done a show since moving to Colorado and decided I wanted to try and get involved in local theater here. OpenStage had an upcoming season that looked really exciting and when I read more about OpenStage as a company, it had a great philosophy and core values, so I auditioned!

What is your role in this production, and what excited you most about working on this particular production?

I am playing an ensemble role and am excited to help bring to life a new production. Also, I get to play multiple different characters in the ensemble and I love that.

What has been the most enjoyable or unexpected part of the rehearsal process so far?
I have greatly enjoyed getting to work with such talented, professional, and generally awesome people.
What has been the most challenging part of bringing this character to life?
 I think it is always a fun challenge to bring the director’s vision to life, but even more so with a new production.
What has been different or interesting about working on a new play?

It has been fascinating watching Miguel coach the actors to bring his show to life. He has really written a lot of depth and nuance into the characters that become even more powerful through the rehearsal process.

Why do you think October Surprise is significant or relevant to audiences today?

I think the examination of values and purpose will always be relevant, but I also think the themes and decisions in the show will invite the audience to examine and discuss their own beliefs.

Can you share any interesting behind-the-scenes moments or stories from the production?

I think that in most rehearsals there have been moments when I’ve recognized a connection or a deeper meaning and thought, “Oh, that’s so clever”. I don’t want to go into detail and give anything away!

If you could swap roles with any other character in this play for a day, who would it be and why?

That’s tough. I would try any character for a day. Playing with all kinds of different characters is part of what I love about acting.

What is your favorite play or musical?

Sweeney Todd.

What is your favorite role you’ve played in the past? Why was that role special to you?

Honestly, it was being in the Ensemble of Sweeney Todd. It was my favorite show and my first time working with a professional theater company. When we showed up for music rehearsal for the first time and everyone sang the opening number I thought it was one of the greatest moments in my life.

Is there a dream role or type of production you hope to work on in the future?

I love musicals, comedies, or shows where I can play multiple different characters. If I could pick a show now, I would love to be in The Play That Goes Wrong.

What do you like to do in your free time when you’re not working on theatre projects?

I work as an LPC (I think psychology and theater go hand in hand), I play board games with my family and friends, I teach voice and acting, my husband and I write musicals, and I’m learning to play tennis.
