Introducing Kira Wendland as Rosie in “Cabaret”

We warmly welcome Kira into the OpenStage family! OpenStage is thrilled to debut local northern Colorado artist, Kira Wendland.

Tell us about yourself! What’s your theatre background? How did you hear about OpenStage?

I started performing at a young age under the influence of my parents—my mom was a dancer and my dad was a professional figure skater. From children’s theatre to a performing arts high school to a BA in Musical Theatre, performing has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since graduating from UNC in 2020, I’ve been trying to work my way through the local Colorado theatre scene and was excited to add OpenStage to the list!

How familiar were you with “Cabaret” prior to the audition process?

I was very familiar with the show and eager to participate! The first time I saw “Cabaret” was during college auditions when the tour was in Chicago, and I knew it was a show I needed to add to my dream list. Soon after seeing the show for the first time, I was lucky enough to perform in a concert with Susan Egan who was in the revival of “Cabaret” and work with some of the choreography from that production!

When you want audiences to take away from “Cabaret”? Why is still must see theatre nearly 60 years later?

I think what’s most fascinating about performing “Cabaret” right now is that everything about it is still 100% relevant today. Something that most theatres are discovering right now is that shows from 60 years ago (or even 20 years ago) are no longer relevant or appropriate in 2022. I am a huge proponent of creating art when it’s for a distinct purpose and you can answer the question, “Why now?” With the chaos surrounding our world right now, I think it’s incredibly important for people to come to see this show and see how tragic it is that this show is not only a representation of the past but a representation of the present.

Come see Kira and the rest of the cast in “Cabaret,” playing opening night is October 29–November 26!

This dynamic and much-loved Tony Award-winning musical continues to seduce audiences with the tantalizing Kit Kat Klub, where the iconic Emcee assures us that “life is beautiful…even the orchestra is beautiful.” As 1930s Germany slowly surrenders to the atrocities of the Third Reich, dreams unravel and lives are demolished. Cabaret is a dark, visceral, and tumultuous ride that finds us “at the end of the world… dancing… while being fast asleep.”
